IMO is an all-purpose messaging tool for Windows that supports text-based messages, video, file-sharing, and voice chat between one to six people. You can think of IMO as a phone inside of a standard Windows program. You go about tasks differently in IMO than you would with a standard phone. But there's a large amount of overlap between what you can actually do with IMO and what you can do with a phone.

Of course, the most obvious point where features overlap is voice-based communication. IMO provides you with the ability to audibly speak with friends and family in real time. And you can even expand a call into a group chat. These group chats support up to six people at once. One of the most impressive aspects of these chats is how little bandwidth they use. Many people report that they're even able to use it on Internet connections in the 2G range. But if bandwidth isn't an issue then you can scale the app's communication up to the next level by adding video.

IMO's video chat is just as easy to use as voice chat. Obviously, it's a little more demanding when it comes to bandwidth. But as long as you have a reasonably fast Internet connection you'll be able to talk with friends and family using sharp, clear, video to go along with the equally crystal clear audio.

IMO also adds some extra features to further enhance how people communicate on its platform. For example, imagine you arrived at a restaurant before some of your friends and wanted to give them a heads-up about what's on the menu. If you had a group call going then it'd be easy to send a copy of the menu to everyone. And that concept holds true whether the menu is a picture you personally captured or a pdf from the restaurant's website. You can send any kind of file to your contacts. And you can even save files to the "IMO cloud" to go over again in the future.

IMO also has a unique take on contact management. You can organize contacts just as you would on your phone. But you can also take that to the next level with contact groups of up to 100,000 members. This makes it especially easy to share images and thoughts with people in a group you're part of. And IMO even has a special "Story" feature to help you collect, categorize, and share your experiences. You can even branch out to meet new IMO users through the "IMO Zones" system.

IMO does an impressive job of making all of those functions easy to use. However, some people might feel that it's a little too simplified. IMO does a great job with everything it supports. But it also lacks a lot of the customization and advanced options found in many similar programs.

Pros

  • Extremely simple and streamlined interfacce
  • Handles multiple communication protocols and file formats
  • Lets users communicate with voice, video, text, and even images

Cons

  • Lack of customization or advanced options
  • Community features are hindered by a fairly small userbase
